Romaine Reserve - Bridge and boardwalk replacement

Works on the Romaine bridge and boardwalk commenced on Thursday 17 July, 2025

Active Transport Strategy - Footpath Replacement - Burnie Park

As part of the Active Transport Strategy, Civilscape will be replacing an existing asphalt footpath at Burnie Park with a new 3.0m wide asphalt footpath.

Active Transport Strategy Adopted

At the October Council meeting, Council adopted the draft Active Transport Strategy.

This is Council’s first Active Transport Strategy and will guide decision making for the next 15 years.

Natural Resource Management

Hellyer College Outdoor Education students have just finished planting at Cooee Beach and the Burton Street Reserve.

Footpath Replacement Program - Osborne Street

Council will be replacing the footpath, kerb, and channel in Osborne Street, Cooee.
These works are part of Councils Footpath replacement program.

South Burnie Beach - Dump Station

The project will involve installing a dump station for Rv/Caravan Users at South Burnie Beach Car Park.

Burnie Arts Civic Plaza Construction update

The constructing team Vos Group are charging through the Civic Plaza redevelopment!

Quarterly Project Updates

The General Manager’s Quarterly Information Report, included in the Council Agenda, offers important updates on the progress of major projects. It highlights recent achievements and developments in infrastructure and community initiatives throughout Burnie.

Urban Rivers and Catchment Program

Burnie City Council was successful in obtaining $1.7 million in grant funding through the Australian Governments Urban Rivers and Catchment Program.

Headwall Replacement Program - Odgen Street

Proposed works involve the removal of the existing headwall and installation of a new 450 mm diameter headwall, in conjunction with the construction of a 1050 mm diameter manhole to facilitate appropriate pipe grading.

Retaining Walls - Wilson Street

The existing retaining wall at the rear of 150 Wilson Street is damaged and requires replacement.

Shorewell Creek Bridge and Boardwalk Replacement

Major works on the bridge and boardwalk replacement at Shorewell creek will commence on Tuesday 12 August 2025.

The section of walking track (between Woniora Rd. and Ogden St.) will be closed during these upgrades.

Footpath Programs

Council’s footpath programs focus on closing gaps in the network and renewing ageing paths. The Network Gap Program improves connectivity to encourage active transport, while the Replacement Program upgrades worn infrastructure, enhance safety and accessibility.

Bitumen Surfacing Services

Asphalt and Spray Seal work sites - each year, Council conducts a public tender for Bitumen Surfacing Services to support our Urban and Rural Roads Reseal Program.

Burnie City Centre Urban Plan

The Final Version of the Burnie City Centre Urban Plan has been adopted by Council at the February Council meeting.

The City Centre Urban Plan will transform the Burnie City Centre to create a vibrant and engaging place to work, live, shop and socialise.

Upper Natone - Horseshoe Bend Updates

Please find all updates outlining the remediation process to rectify the damage caused as the result of extreme weather in October 2022 to Horseshoe Bend.

Past Projects and Works

Jeremy White Court official opening

The Jeremy White Court was officially opened today in what will be an enduring tribute to the sports loving Jeremy, who would have celebrated his 52nd birthday today.

Multi Storey Car Park Refresh

From Thursday 12 June, Council teams will be giving the multi storey car park a pressure wash. 🫧💦 The majority of cleaning will be done before the car park being open (6:30am), ensuring minimal interruptions to all parking (including reserved, disabled and pram). During open hours, small areas will be sectioned off periodically to add disability compliance tactiles

Disability Compliance - Multi Storey Carpark Tactiles

Council is undertaking works in the CBD to improve accessibility and safety for individuals with visual impairments, with Tactile Ground Surface Indicators (TGSI's)

Burnie Arts redevelopment project

We are excited to share with you the progress towards a reimagined Burnie Arts.

Burnie Band Rooms - Completed

The impressive new practice and performance spaces at West Park are now complete! Council invites the community to explore the facilities at our Open Day on Saturday, 1 April. Come along and take a look! 👀📯🎵

Reserve Footpath Renewal

The existing asphalt footpath from Charles Street to Jones Street has expired and is showing signs of deterioration. The path will be replaced with concrete, in line with Councils current footpath strategy.

Lawn Cemetery - Bridge & Boardwalk Replacement

The project aims to transform the current pond area into a scenic walkway leading to a secluded circular seating space, providing a relaxing spot for visitors.

Burnie Gateway Project

The pataway/Burnie Gateway Commission will help the council enhance the visual appeal of the city entrance, greeting visitors with a welcoming wave gesture.

Hodgman Street Road Closed - Civil Works

Hodgman Street will be closed to the public periodically from Tuesday 18th February to late June whilst Contractors work on the water main and demolish and reconstruct a failed section of the retaining wall on the eastern side.

West Ridgley Road Culvert Replacement

A culvert on West Ridgley Road at Serpent Creek is undergoing replacement, with drainage issues being addressed in the upgrade.

Romaine Reserve Pathway

Transforming the old crushed-granite track into a smooth, durable 2.5m wide shared-use concrete path

McKenna Park Hockey Centre Upgrades

Burnie City Council has welcomed the announcement of $500,00 from the State Government towards upgrading the McKenna Park Facility.

Oonah Road - Guide River Bridge Replacement

Construction of the new bridge is now complete, and the road has reopened. Minor shoulder work on the approaches to be completed.

Futuna Ave and West Park Grove Roundabout

Works to construct the roundabout at Futuna Ave and West Park Grove will begin 13 January 2025 . The roundabout is partly funded by the Federal Governments Blackspot program.

Burnie Coastal Pathway

Since 2009, the Coastal Pathway development in Burnie has included sections from Emu River to Red Rock and Cooee to Cam River, featuring shared bike paths and walking tracks.

Oonah Road - Updates

Updates outlining the remediation process to rectify the damage caused as the result of extreme weather in October 2022 to Oonah Road East and Oonah Road West.

Flood Risk Reduction Program

The project will include the reconstruction of table drains along Ellis Road, reinforced with rock lining to enhance road drainage efficiency.

State and Local Investment

Oakleigh Rail Underpass Barrier Upgrades

The safety barriers on the Burnie-bound and Wivenhoe-bound rail underpasses on the Bass Highway between Edwardes Street and Wilson Street will be inspected on 2–3 December 2025. Works run nightly from 6:00 pm to 6:30 am, with a reduced speed limit and one lane open each way. Minor delays are expected.

Hydro Tasmania EOI - new wind and solar projects

Hydro Tasmania is seeking new wind and solar projects producing up to 1,500 GWh annually through commercial offtake agreements, operational in the near term. Driven by the Marinus Link project connecting Tasmania to the mainland grid, the call aims to diversify energy sources, support grid stability, and boost Tasmania’s role in Australia’s renewable energy transition. EOI closes 5 December.

Seaview Avenue Water Main Renewal

Taswater are upgrading Burnie’s water network, replacing the existing main between Seaview Avenue and Princes Street with a new, more reliable main along West Park Grove. Contractors will be working along sections of West Park Grove from 8 - 12 December 2025 between 9.30am and 2.30pm.

Ridgley Highway - South of Ridgley

Roads Tas will be repairing and strengthening a section of the Ridgley Highway, between Ridgley and Highclere.
From Monday, 10 November 2025 to Friday, 27 February 2026.
🚧 Frequent Lane closures from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.
🚧Please allow an extra 15 minutes if you are travelling through the area.

Pet Dam Spillway Upgrade

Preparatory works have begun on the Ridgley Water Treatment Plant upgrade. Tree clearing started in Nov ahead of dam embankment and pipe upgrades within the WTP. A new spillway and bridge on Circular Road, East Ridgley will follow, with completion due Dec 2027. The project will boost regional water security and strengthen long-term infrastructure.

Burnie Health Hub

The $24m Burnie Health Hub led by Jack and Dr Jerome Muir Wilson with architect Heath Clayton is transforming the former UTAS site on Mooreville Road into a modern health precinct. A 24-hour pathology lab is operating. By Jul 2026 it will add a pharmacy, urgent care, GP clinic and playgroup. demolition finished in Oct in Nov, new renders of Ro’s Bodega Café were released, construction now underway

Burnie Courts Complex Relocation Project

The $86.5M Burnie Court Complex at 100–106 Wilson St will deliver a Supreme Court, two Magistrates Courts, a Family Court, and a shared courtroom. Enabling works are underway, with demolition finished by year’s end. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2026 and finish in late 2027. In November, Arts Tasmania called for EOIs for outdoor artwork, and the Request for Tender was released.

North West Mental Health Precinct

The $40m Precinct beside the Burnie Ambulance Station is progressing through detailed design and approvals. It will include a 22-bed inpatient unit and a five-bed short-stay unit, offering a modern, therapeutic, recovery-focused environment. Updated concept designs were released in November, with a DA submitted. Construction is expected to begin in late 2026 and finish in 2028.

North West Regional Resource Recovery (NWRRR) Project

Led by the Cradle Coast Waste Management Group with nine councils and managed by Dulverton Waste Services, this program uses the state waste levy to deliver FOGO, recycling, and recovery education. In 2025, activities included FOGO rollout to Burnie and Circular Head in September, bin checks Oct-Dec, and household hazardous waste and tyre amnesty events in November. Seaview Avenue, Burnie - Reinstatement Works

TasWater will reinstate the pathway between Seaview Avenue and Amelia Street after damage from a burst water main. Construction begins Monday, 10 November 2025 between the hours of 7.30am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday and will run for around four weeks, weather permitting. Expect some noise, parking changes, and temporary access limits as crews restore safe, reliable community access.

Brickport Road Sewage Pump Station Upgrade

Condition assessments for the Brickport Road Sewage Pump Station Upgrade began on 8 October 2025, with construction scheduled to start in December. The project, aimed at reducing odours, improving safety, and upgrading infrastructure with a new dosing unit and SCADA monitoring, is expected to be completed by January 2026, with minimal disruption anticipated during works.

TasNetworks' North West Transmission Developments

TasNetworks lodged a permit application on 21 Oct 2025 for the Palmerston to Hampshire section of the North West Transmission Developments, Stage 1, delivered with GenusPlus Group, which supports Tasmania’s goal of doubling clean energy by 2040. Land access is expected to be finalised by 1  Dec 2025, with local contractors and suppliers encouraged to register to support the project.

Marinus Link Project Updates

The $5B 750 MW interconnector between Tas and Vic received federal and state environmental approval in Aug & Nov 2025. TasVic Greenlink (DT Infrastructure & Samsung C&T) was selected as preferred contractor for major civils, including Heybridge and Hazelwood converter stations and 90 km of land cables. Construction starts 2026, creating ~2,400 jobs and enabling renewable energy for 750,000 homes.

Cradle Coast Future Energy Hub

Tasmania’s Cradle Coast is emerging as a major renewable energy zone, with projects including the TasTAFE Clean Energy Centre of Excellence, Hellyer Wind Farm, HIF e-Fuels Facility, Marinus Link, and the NW Transmission Developments. In Nov 2025, an Energy Series campaign launched to explain the facts and highlight Tasmania’s opportunities in leading the clean-energy transition shaping our future.

Homes Tasmania - social and affordable housing

Homes Tasmania is expanding housing in Burnie with three projects. Kentish Drive, Shorewell Park, offers 12 serviced lots from $85K via MyHome. Park Grove’s 6.25 ha site will deliver ~55 lots by 2026, 85% private sale and 15% rentals. At 3 Atkins Drive, Romaine, a DA was approved in October 2025 for 18 two-bedroom social homes in walking distance to schools.

HIF Tasmania e-Fuel Facility

A $500 million renewable energy project is proposed for Burnie’s former pulp mill site. HIF Tasmania plans to build Australia’s first large-scale e-Fuels facility, producing carbon-neutral e-Methanol for global shipping. Backed by Porsche AG, the project could create 600+ jobs and make Burnie a clean-energy export hub. A Notice of Intent was lodged on 8 Oct 2025, with early community engagement.

Complete Care Pharmacy

Jack Muir Wilson, Kath Witherden, and Heather Wilde have transformed the former Contel Communications site into a 524 m² Complete Care Pharmacy, four times larger than their previous store. The $1.2 million project opened on 20 October 2025, featuring modern health services, a Packzilla dispensing robot, and two disability parking spaces right outside, strengthening community care in the CBD.

Robbins Island and Jim’s Plain Wind

The $3B, 900 MW Robbins Island & Jim’s Plain Wind project in NW Tasmania received federal environmental approval on 29 Aug 2025, with state approvals in place. Up to 100 turbines will generate $600 M during construction and $30 M+ annually. Next steps include finalising contractors, detailed design, community updates, and enabling works ahead of construction starting late 2025–early 2026.
