Local Government Elections

Local Government elections are held every four years to determine the representatives for the Burnie City Council.

Voting is conducted by Postal Ballot.

Is Voting Compulsory?
Yes. Voting is compulsory for all residents on the State Electoral Roll. Failure to vote may result in a fine. Voting remains optional for those enrolled on the General Manager’s Roll (non-resident owners/occupiers).

Am I Enrolled?

If you’re on the State Electoral Roll at an address in Burnie, you’re automatically enrolled for Burnie Council elections.  Check your Enrolment Status (TEC Website)

If you own property or a business in Burnie but live elsewhere, you may still be eligible to vote, but enrolment is not automatic, you must apply to the General Manager to be added to the Roll.

Who can apply?

  • Non-Citizen Residents: You live in Burnie but are not an Australian Citizen.
  • Property/Business Owners: You own or lease a shop, office, or holiday home in Burnie but reside in another municipality.
  • Corporate Bodies: You are the nominated representative of a company that owns/occupies land in Burnie.

 

How to Enrol
You must download, print, and return the relevant form to Council Customer Service via mail or in-person. Online submissions are not currently available.
