Local Government elections are held every four years to determine the representatives for the Burnie City Council.

Candidate nominations will open on 7 September and close on 21 September 2026.

 Monday 7 September   Nominations open

 Tuesday 22 September   Nominations announced 
 Monday 5 October   Ballot packs delivered by post 
 Tuesday 27 October   Close of poll
 Wednesday 28 October   Counting commences

Is Voting Compulsory?
Yes. Voting is compulsory for all residents on the State Electoral Roll. Failure to vote may result in a fine. Voting remains optional for those enrolled on the General Manager’s Roll (non-resident owners/occupiers).

Am I Enrolled?

If you’re on the State Electoral Roll at an address in Burnie, you’re automatically enrolled for Burnie Council elections.  Check your Enrolment Status (TEC Website)

If you own property or a business in Burnie but live elsewhere, you may still be eligible to vote, but enrolment is not automatic, you must apply to the General Manager to be added to the Roll.

General Managers Roll

You may be eligible for the General Manager's Local Government Roll in Burnie if:

  • you are a resident in the Burnie municipality but not eligible for the state electoral roll (eg. you are not an Australian Citizen)
  • you own or occupy land in Burnie but do not live in Burnie (eg. you lease a shop or own a shack)
  • you are the nominated representative of a corporate body that owns or occupies land in Burnie


How to Enrol
Enrolment on the General Manager's Roll is not automatic, but requires you to register using the request form below.

Download and print the form below. Return your completed form to Council by mail, in-person, or email to burnie@burnie.tas.gov.au

If your details have changed please use the relevant form to register and ensure your details are up to date on the General Manager's Roll.
