Cruise Ships

The City of Burnie has a proud 20-year history of providing exceptional meet-and-greet services to the cruise ship industry. What started with a single visit in 1999 has now grown to welcome over 40 ships per season. Cruise ship visits play a vital role in the tourism economy of the region, with passengers and crew exploring Burnie and the surrounding areas in north-west Tasmania.

Burnie's Mayor, councillors, and our dedicated volunteers, also known as our Burnie Experience Experts, are always ready to warmly welcome cruise ship passengers to our beautiful city, rain or shine. Our Burnie Discovery Hub in the Burnie Arts Plaza serves as the visitor central on cruise ship days, offering a wide range of visitor services, including:

  • Commercial operators selling their tourism experiences;
  • Makers selling their artisan products;
  • Mobile food vendors;
  • Musical Entertainers
  • Federation Street exhibition at the Museum; and
  • Performances and events at the Burnie Arts and Function Centre.

With over 80,000 passengers and crew expected to visit Burnie in the 2023-24 season, we are constantly seeking new Burnie Experience Experts. If you have a passion for people, love Burnie, and would like to contribute to helping our visitors experience the best of what our city has to offer, we invite you to register as a volunteer today. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Private tour/transport operators, mobile food vendors, makers, and other commercial operators can register to be situated within the Discover Burnie Hub to sell their products and experiences. Register as a private operator
