Food Businesses
A food business is any enterprise or activity that sells food or handles food intended for sale.
Burnie City Council maintains a register of food businesses, provides food safety advice and undertakes inspections to help ensure food sold within the municipality is safe and suitable for consumption.
Do I need to register or notify?
Under the Food Act 2003, food businesses are classified according to the types of food they sell and the food handling activities they undertake.
-
Registration is required for food businesses classified as higher risk (P1, P2 and P3). This generally includes businesses that prepare, cook, manufacture or handle potentially hazardous foods.
-
Notification is required for food businesses classified as lower risk (P3-N and P4). This generally includes businesses selling low-risk, pre-packaged or otherwise lower-risk foods.
Examples of food businesses include restaurants, cafes, takeaways, bakeries, supermarkets, mobile food businesses, market stalls and food manufacturers.
If you are unsure whether your business requires registration or notification, please contact Council's Environmental Health Officers for advice.
Free Online Food Safety Training
