Council, together with other authorities, plays a vital role in safeguarding public health by administering state legislation and providing guidance on environmental health matters to the community.
The primary piece of legislation that relates directly to public health is the Public Health Act 1997. A range of legally enforceable guidelines have been developed under the Act that can be directly accessed via the Department of Health and Human Services.
