TasNetworks' North West Transmission Developments

In October the permit application for Stage 1 of the North West Transmission Developments (NWTD) project was on public exhibition.

Stage 1 of the NWTD includes the proposed transmission alignment between Palmerston (near Cressy) to Sheffield and Sheffield to Burnie via a spur line to Heybridge.

This marks a major step in delivering the new high-voltage transmission infrastructure that will strengthen Tasmania’s electricity network and support the state’s renewable energy ambitions.

Stage 1 of the project, delivered in partnership with GenusPlus Group, focuses on upgrading and constructing new transmission lines and substations to improve the resilience and capacity of the North West network. The development is a cornerstone of Tasmania’s plan to double clean energy production by 2040, enabling greater integration of renewable generation and improving connections between regional energy projects and the national grid.

TasNetworks is also committed to ensuring local benefits through the delivery of this project. Local contractors, suppliers, and service providers are encouraged to register their interest to support construction, logistics, and ongoing maintenance opportunities. With planning now advancing and site activities expected to ramp up in 2026, the project represents a significant investment in the region’s energy future and a boost for local employment and industry participation.
