Footpath Replacement Program

his program is part of Council’s commitment to improving the safety, accessibility, and usability of Burnie’s ‘Active Transport’ pedestrian infrastructure. The program focuses on renewing ageing or damaged sections of existing footpaths throughout the municipality to reduce maintenance costs and enhance the walking experience for residents and visitors alike.

The works, being delivered by Hardings Group, involve the removal of deteriorated concrete or asphalt sections and replacement with new, durable concrete paths built to current accessibility standards. This year’s program prioritises high-use and high-risk locations identified through condition assessments and community feedback.

These upgrades will result in smoother, safer footpaths and improved accessibility, particularly for seniors, people with mobility issues, parents with prams, and school-aged children walking to and from school.

Footpath Network Gap Program

The Footpath Network Gap Program aims to improve pedestrian connectivity by addressing missing links in Burnie’s footpath network, particularly in areas where no formal path previously existed. These upgrades enhance pedestrian safety, accessibility, and encourage more active transport in local communities.

Construction under the current program is well underway and is expected to be completed prior to Easter 2025. Works at the East Cam Road site have been completed, delivering a new section of footpath that now links residential, light industrial and recreational areas. At Scarfe Street, works are approximately halfway through, with footpath installation progressing steadily despite some minor weather delays. Once complete, these connections will fill long-standing gaps in the network and provide safer, more direct routes for pedestrians.
