Shorewell Park Playground Updates

Burnie City Council invited the community for input to help select the new playground design for Shorewell Park.

Design 3 was the clear community favourite with 55% of the votes!

This exciting new playground will create a space where community can come together, play, and thrive.

Urban Rivers and Catchment Program

Burnie City Council was successful in obtaining $1.7 million in grant funding through the Australian Governments Urban Rivers and Catchment Program.

Upper Natone - Horseshoe Bend Updates

Please find all updates outlining the remediation process to rectify the damage caused as the result of extreme weather in October 2022 to Horseshoe Bend.

We would like to thank the community for your patience and understanding as we work hard in repairing this road.

Burnie Arts Civic Plaza Project Update

The redeveloped plaza and landscaped areas will provide places for entertainment and relaxation.

Through initiatives in the Urban Plan, it will also have better connections to the waterfront and shopping areas.

Burnie City Centre Urban Plan

The Final Version of the Burnie City Centre Urban Plan has been adopted by Council at the February Council meeting.

The City Centre Urban Plan will transform the Burnie City Centre to create a vibrant and engaging place to work, live, shop and socialise.

Urban Reseal Program 2025-26

Council has allocated funds for the resealing of Paraka Street, Ross Street, Halstead Street, and Three Mile Line Road.

Active Transport Strategy Adopted

At the October Council meeting, Council adopted the draft Active Transport Strategy.

This is Council’s first Active Transport Strategy and will guide decision making for the next 15 years.

Hydro Tasmania EOI - new wind and solar projects

Hydro Tasmania is seeking new wind and solar projects producing up to 1,500 GWh annually through commercial offtake agreements, operational in the near term. Driven by the Marinus Link project connecting Tasmania to the mainland grid, the call aims to diversify energy sources, support grid stability, and boost Tasmania’s role in Australia’s renewable energy transition. EOI closes 5 December.

South Burnie Beach - Boat Ramp Redevelopment Project

South Burnie Boat Ramp infrastructure redevelopment will improve the overall amenity and functionality for recreational boat users, other watercraft and the fishing enthusiasts amongst us.

Burnie Park Walking Track Upgrade Completed 🌿🚶‍♂️

As part of Council’s Active Transport Strategy, Council have upgraded the existing asphalt footpath at Burnie Park - widening it to 3 metres to create a safer, more accessible space for everyone to enjoy.

Active Transport Strategy - Footpath Replacement - Burnie Park

As part of the Active Transport Strategy, Civilscape will be replacing an existing asphalt footpath at Burnie Park with a new 3.0m wide asphalt footpath.

CCTV Upgrade – Multi Storey Car Park

From Monday 19 January, works will begin to replace and upgrade the CCTV system in the Multi Storey Car Park. This project is part of Councils 2025-26 Capital Works Program, and is expected to take approximately four weeks to complete.

South Burnie Beach - Dump Station

The project will involve installing a dump station for Rv/Caravan Users at South Burnie Beach Car Park.

Burnie Gateway Project

The pataway/Burnie Gateway Commission will help the council enhance the visual appeal of the city entrance, greeting visitors with a welcoming wave gesture.

Netball Centre - Court Resurfacing

The asphalt on courts 3-8 at the Netball Centre is being replaced due to large cracks in the playing surface and surrounding areas, which pose a safety risk for both players and spectators.

Quarterly Project Updates 2025

The General Manager’s Quarterly Information Report, included in the Council Agenda, offers important updates on the progress of major projects. It highlights recent achievements and developments in infrastructure and community initiatives throughout Burnie.

Romaine Reserve - Bridge and boardwalk replacement

Works on the Romaine bridge and boardwalk commenced on Thursday 17 July, 2025.

As of 18 December, 2025 - the project is now completed.

State and Local Investment

Wivenhoe Underpass Bass Highway

Transport Services Tasmania completed repairs and strengthening of the South Burnie–Wivenhoe eastbound rail underpass on the Bass Highway between Stowport Rd and Clarke St in October 2025, improving safety, durability and reliability. Follow-up works from 16 Mar to 3 Apr 2026 to relocate safety barriers and widened the Heybridge-bound road edge to improve cyclist safety .

Oakleigh Rail Underpass Barrier Upgrades

Safety barriers are being upgraded at the Oakleigh rail underpasses on the Bass Highway in Burnie to meet current safety standards. Works will replace barriers on both the Cooee-bound and Wivenhoe-bound approaches between Edwardes Street and Wilson Street. Survey works occur 10–17 March 2026, with construction starting 30 March & expected to finish by 5 June 2026. Reduced speeds and lane closures

North West Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Upgrade

State Growth Transport Services is expanding road safety infrastructure across North West Tasmania, with Stage 1 CCTV and fibre works underway in the Burnie CBD and 19 sites planned along the Bass Highway to Cooee. In February 2026, Burnie City Council replaced its MSCP CCTV system, upgrading to 63 high-resolution cameras delivering 20% better coverage. Police have 24/7 access.

Burnie Health Hub

The $24m investment is transforming the former UTAS Mooreville Rd site into a modern health precinct. Led by Jack and Dr Jerome Muir Wilson, designed by Heath Clayton and built by Fairbrother, In Feb 2026, a Medicare Urgent Care Clinic opened (12–10pm, 7 days, bulk billed) to join the 24-hour pathology. By July 2026, a pharmacy, GP clinic, café (Ro’s Bodega) playgroup, playground, sensory garden

Just Cats Tasmania Expansion

Just Cats currently takes in around 1,600 cats each year, with demand expected to rise to 2,000–2,500. In May 2025, Burnie secured $425,000 to deliver a new accredited cat management facility with capacity for up to 70 cats. A separate intake and quarantine facility near Burnie, with around 30 pens up to 300 cats, to support biosecurity. The group commenced shortfall fundraising in February 2026.

Marinus Link Project Updates

Feb 2026 The AER approved cost recovery for Marinus Link and the North West Transmission Developments, clearing the way for construction in 2026. In Dec 2025, the final Stage 1 major works contract was signed with TasVic Greenlink (TVGL) a joint venture of DT Infrastructure (DTI) and Samsung C&T to deliver the $994 M converter stations at Heybridge and Hazelwood and 90 km of land cables.

Elementos Cleveland Tin Project

The Cleveland Tin Project, 80 km south-west of Burnie, is exploring copper, gold, silver and critical minerals including tungsten and fluorite. Drilling commenced 14 March 2025, backed by $5 million from Metals X. In February 2026, Elementos announced a major tungsten Mineral Resource Estimate increase to 8.49 Mt @ 0.24% WO₃ around double the 2014 figure following new data and ore testing

Jackson Motor Company Camdale Expansion

Construction is underway on the Jackson Motor Company expansion at Camdale, strengthening Burnie’s role as a regional automotive hub. Approved in Aug 2024, the project will deliver new Hyundai and Nissan showrooms, ~50 car parks and updated signage. Buildings at 2–4 Scarfe St are being replaced to expand the existing 6–14 Scarfe St dealership, creating a modern seven-brand automotive precinct on a

Tarraleah Redevelopment Project

Hydro Tas reached a key milestone on the multi-billion-dollar Tarraleah Redevelopment in Feb 2026, moving into the tender phase for major construction works and new generation equipment. Part of Battery of the Nation, the project includes a new 190 MW power station, tunnels and pipeline from Lake King William, surge tower and transmission link. The Federal Government has committed up to $65 mil
