Shorewell Park Playground Redevelopment

Burnie City Council is redeveloping the playground at Wiseman Street Reserve in Shorewell Park to create a safe, inclusive and engaging space for children, families and the wider community.

Upper Natone Road - Horseshoe Bend

Burnie City Council has secured $3.1 million in Australian Government funding to help progress the Upper Natone Road Realignment at Horseshoe Bend. The funding forms part of Council’s $4 million allocation for the project in the 2026–27 Annual Plan and Budget Estimates.

North Terrace rail removal moves forward

The removal of approximately 800 metres of rail along North Terrace is progressing, following approval from the Minister for Transport and the awarding of the works contract.

Burnie Arts Redevelopment recognised with two major industry awards

The Burnie Arts Centre Redevelopment has received two major accolades at the 2026 Master Builders Tasmania Awards for Excellence, recognising the scale of the project and the specialist craftsmanship that has helped transform the Centre into a vibrant community asset.

Planning for Future Sporting Infrastructure

Council is developing a vision for Burnie’s future sporting needs, with a proposed new multi-sport precinct at McKenna Park and four-court stadium at Burnie High School.

Hydro Tasmania EOI - new wind and solar projects

Hydro Tasmania is seeking new wind and solar projects producing up to 1,500 GWh annually through commercial offtake agreements, operational in the near term. Driven by the Marinus Link project connecting Tasmania to the mainland grid, the call aims to diversify energy sources, support grid stability, and boost Tasmania’s role in Australia’s renewable energy transition. EOI closes 5 December.

Past Projects and Works

Brooklyn Road Safety Upgrades

Council is partnering with the State Government through the Vulnerable Road User program to improve safety on Brooklyn Road at the junction with the walking track.

Burnie Lawn Cemetery - Footpath replacement

Kindly be advised that Council’s Civil team will commence footpath replacement works at the Lawn Cemetery from Monday 18 May.

Burnie Arts Civic Plaza Project Update

The redeveloped plaza and landscaped areas will provide places for entertainment and relaxation.

Through initiatives in the Urban Plan, it will also have better connections to the waterfront and shopping areas.

Cam Court Upgrade

The road seal in Cam Court is in poor condition and due for replacement.

Footpath Replacement Program - Mount Street

The asphalt footpath from Bathurst Street to Roslyn Avenue is worn out and in poor condition. It will be replaced with a new concrete footpath, built to Tasmanian Standards, in three stages. Work is scheduled to begin the week of 8 September.

Works at West Park - creek culvert

Commencing Thursday 6th March, Council contractors will be undertaking works to unblock the Shorewell Creek culvert (that passes under the Highway and Coastal Pathway) and remove willows and other invasive weeds just west of West Park on the shoreline.

Works are expected to be completed by Tuesday 11th March.

Burnie Truck Washdown and Effluent Disposal Facility completed

The Burnie Truck Washdown and Effluent Disposal Facility at Minna Road is now complete, marking an important milestone in the delivery of critical infrastructure to support North-West Tasmania’s livestock, transport and agricultural industries.

Digital Transformation Projects

We aim to enhance our services by using digital technology to improve collaboration and be easier to deal access from anywhere, any time of the day, on any device.

Oonah Road - Guide River Bridge Replacement

Construction of the new bridge is now complete, and the road has reopened. Minor shoulder work on the approaches to be completed.

State and Local Investment

Bass Hwy Pedestrian Crossings

Upgrades to 7 crossings along the Bass Highway, including pedestrian islands east of Raglan St, connecting Elizabeth St to Bells Parade, East Cam Rd, Youngs Veggie Shed, and a crossing between Fidler St and Burnie Ocean View Motel.

Funded federally ($1 M) and by the state ($250 K), construction is due to start on Site 1 Cooee on 12 Oct 2026 will take up to four weeks, others by end of year

TasNetworks' North West Transmission Developments (NWTD)

Bright Futures Fund Round 2 closes 25 Oct 2026. Round 1 funds were awarded to 12 projects.

On 18 Aug 2026, TASCAT upheld the planning permit for the 129km Palmerston–Hampshire section.

Genus is expanding operations, creating local business opportunities, while high-voltage equipment passed factory testing in Jul.

A $1.2 bil CEFC funding package secured in May will help reduce pricing impacts.

Marinus Link Heybridge Converter Station

DT Infrastructure has mobilised teams to begin early establishment and preparatory works for the Marinus Link converter station at Heybridge, with increased activity expected as works ramp up.

As part of these preparatory works, a single lane closure will be in place on the Bass Highway each in each direction between Minna Road and the end of the Heybridge site from 12-15 Oct | 9.30am - 3.30pm

Oakleigh Rail Underpass Barrier Upgrades

Safety barrier upgrade work from 16 Sep - 16 Oct at the Oakleigh rail underpass on the Bass Highway in Burnie to meet current safety standards.

Works to replace barriers on both the Cooee-bound and Wivenhoe-bound approaches between Edwardes Street and Wilson Street. $1.5 million project is funded by the Federal government.

North West Mental Health Precinct

Vos Construction was awarded a $40 m contract in September 2026 to build a new Mental Health Precinct beside Burnie Ambulance Station.

Approved in May, the facility will replace Spencer Clinic with 22 inpatient beds, five short-stay beds, clinical facilities and therapeutic gardens.

Construction starts with a temporary access road via Uplands Place, with works scheduled weekdays, 7am–5pm.

Oakleigh Railway Underpass Safety Barrier Replacement. 16 Sep - 26 Oct both directions.

Pedestrian Upgrades for Bass Highway from Cooee to Somerset between Fidler Street, Cooee and Raglan Street, Somerset. 7:00 am to 5:30 pm

NW Private Cardiac Catheterisation Lab

The new $6.2m Lab at North West Private Hospital has officially opened Oct 2026, bringing advanced cardiac care to Burnie.

The Healthe Care and Charles Heart joint venture enables coronary angiograms, detailed heart imaging and monitoring devices locally, with stents and pacemakers to follow.

The service means fewer trips to Launceston and brings new cardiology specialists to the NW Coast.

Poatina Power Station Upgrades

Hydro Tasmania’s $200m refurbishment program is progressing, with the 2nd of 6 turbines undergoing a 9-month overhaul.

The station has returned to service following its Jul–Oct 2026 outage, which also enabled electrical upgrades and penstock and headrace tunnel recoating. Further works are planned Apr-Sep 2027.

A $3.5m site upgrade includes a new building, warehouse, EV charging, control room.

Elementos Cleveland Tin Project

80km southwest of Burnie, is exploring tin, copper, gold, silver and critical minerals. Drilling began in Mar 2025, backed by $5M from Metals X. The tungsten resource doubled to 8.49Mt.

June work included LiDAR surveys, geotechnical and metallurgical testing, and assessing rubidium and fluorspar.

In Oct 2026, a 3,600m diamond drilling program was approved for Nov to test resource extensions
