Wilmot Street Vandalism

Burnie City Council is aware that a number of windows in businesses and Council facilities in the CBD have been damaged overnight.  A 15 year old female is currently in the custody of Tasmania Police and it is believed that she is the sole alleged offender.  The most significant damage was to Council’s Multi-Storey Carpark.  Council workers responded overnight to make the area safe and were back on site first thing this morning to clean up and to organize urgent repairs.  Council has also cleaned broken glass off Wilmot Street footpaths, where much of the damage occurred.  If your business has been affected we urge you to report this to Tasmania Police.

This latest incident is obviously concerning.  Burnie City Council is continuing to work with Tasmania Police and our community to deal with criminal and anti-social behaviours in our CBD.  To that end, the Mayor is still waiting to have confirmed her request to meet with the State Attorney-General, Ministers for Police and Education all of whom have responsibilities for the service systems that need to support our local community efforts.

Today (Thursday 10 August 2023), Ian Jones from Business North West and the Mayor will be visiting local CBD businesses to distribute a fact sheet with safety advice.  Mayor Brumby added:

“This was an initiative that came out of last week’s community roundtable.  Unfortunately, there are no quick fixes to the current problem, but Burnie City Council and our community leaders will continue to work on local solutions.  But it is vital that we get a more coordinated response from the State Government and Council will continue to pursue that outcome.”

Burnie City Councillors Cr. Amina Keygan, Mayor Teeny Brumby, Cr. Trent Aitken and Cr. David Pease are calling on the State Government to respond to Councils requests.
