Launch of Community Consultation – Burnie’s New Cultural Centre

In 2021 the Burnie City Council developed a new vision for the delivery of artistic and cultural services for the City of Burnie.

This vision is centered around refurbishing the existing Burnie Arts and Functions Centre, to create a multi-faceted hub that will bring together art and museum exhibitions, performing arts, events, functions and a diverse range of workshops, all in one building.  An ever changing Centre that evolves and brings all sectors of our Burnie community together to celebrate and learn about our heritage, our future and everything in between – the stories that our community want to tell.

Mayor Kons said “we are excited to reach the second milestone in our journey, having now developed draft architectural plans for our new Centre, that we want to share with our community.  We want to hear what you love about the design and what you may not like.  We encourage your feedback because we understand that diversity of opinion, creates better outcomes for all.

The Council would like to take the opportunity in particular to thank community members Tich Ferencz and Eleanor Austin who have been an important part of the Steering Committee who have been working hard to develop the draft plans.  Their contribution and input has been incredibly important to enabling us to present draft plans that we believe will inspire and excite our broad Burnie community.”  

The community consultation period opens today on Monday 10 October and will run for a month, closing at midnight on 7 November 2022.  During that time there will be a number of pop up exhibitions established in the foyer of the Council Centre and at the Burnie Arts and Function Centre, where the community can go and see a 3D walkthrough of the draft architectural design, and check out the architectural plans in more detail.  There will be a number of community pop in sessions established where staff will be on hand to answer any questions you may have, and all information will of course be made available on Council’s website.  Feedback will be by way of a short survey which is available from the pop up sessions or stalls, online or you may provide a written submission by collecting a survey from the Council Centre.

This is a significant project for Burnie’s future, and one of the major goals of Council’s vision is to establish a Centre that non-traditional users of the existing Centre will want to visit.
