Funding Update on the Cultural Centre and Precinct

Council is forging ahead with plans for Burnie’s new Cultural Centre and Precinct with $18 million in government funding now committed to the project.

Council secured $5 million in funding from the previous federal government, and received a further pledge of $13 million during the 2022 federal election which is secured now that the Labor Party has formed government.

Council is also contributing $2 million in funding which means this is now a $20 million project!

The Council adopted the vision for the experience it wishes to deliver as part of the new Cultural Centre and Precinct, at its meeting held in August 2021. Xsquared Architects have since been appointed and are working on a draft design response concept in collaboration with a Steering Committee. The Steering Committee is made up of key Council officers and importantly two community members, Tich Ferencz and Eleanor Austin, who are vital in ensuring our community’s views are represented.

The Council remains committed to consulting with the community regarding the architectural designs when they are completed. These will form the basis of a comprehensive community consultation process that will run for approximately eight weeks to enable the community to have their say on the new Cultural Centre.

Council placed a submission to the Tasmanian Government as part of the 2022-23 State Budget for a further $5 million for the project, however no commitment was made in the budget that was handed down last week.
