Federal Budget – Burnie Cultural Precinct

Burnie City Council welcomes the announcement in last night’s Federal budget confirming the $13 million Labor election commitment for refurbishment of the Burnie Arts and Function Centre in Burnie’s Cultural Precinct.
Mayor Steve Kons said, “This is great news for Burnie. Council is currently consulting with our community on the architectural designs for the refurbishment that will create our vibrant new cultural centre.
This announcement in last night’s Federal budget will enable us to proceed as planned with works currently scheduled to start mid 2023.
Burnie City Council looks forward to working with the Albanese Government in delivering this project for Burnie and the North-West region of Tasmania.
This confirmed funding now provides the Council with a $20 million budget to undertake this project, with $18 million being provided by the Federal Government and $2 million from Council’s capital works budget.
The major redevelopment of the BAFC will provide a vibrant cultural space in which our whole community can meet to celebrate and tell our own stories, share our unique culture and experiences and hear and experience other cultural experiences and stories.”
The community consultation period on the architectural design for the refurbished building continues until 7 November 2022. Details are available at burnie.tas.gov.au/draftArchitecturalPlans.
Mayor Kons said, “We welcome continuing community engagement and input to this process. Please if you haven’t already done so look at the architectural plans and provide your feedback.”
Senator Anne Urquhart said, “The Albanese Labor government is committed to building a better Braddon, and the refurbishment of the Burnie Arts and Function Centre is a key part of that.”
