Burnie City Council is working on two exciting projects under the banner of Burnie Beats to find and create the beating heart of Burnie by revitalising the CBD and gateway entries to the city.

The Burnie City Centre Urban Plan will be a transformational plan for the city centre over the next 10-15 years, capturing the essence of Burnie as the “City of Makers”. The Urban Plan is intended to drive our city centre forward as a vibrant place that provides a range of experiences and activities and is engaging, inclusive, safe and easy to navigate for the local community and visitors. We wish to strengthen the city centre as a dynamic place to live, work, play and do business.

The Urban Plan represents a timely opportunity to revisit priorities and future directions for the city centre. It is a time to reflect on the history of the city, its indigenous roots and industrial heritage that has led to where we are today.

As a long-term plan that sets out future priorities for our city centre, we want to hear from you! There are a number of opportunities coming up for you to get involved from late May to mid-June, so stay tuned…

This project commenced in early March and delivery of the Urban Plan is anticipated by August 2023. Our process seeks to embrace and celebrate what is unique about Burnie; its essence and place values. This is to understand what matters most to the Burnie community, as the basis for planning its future and taking action. Each stage of the project represents a stepping stone to the formulation of a future plan, to help revitalise the beating heart of Burnie.

The project will run in parallel with the Gateway project, which collectively will weave further threads into the fabric of the city, instilling a strong sense of pride and identity.
