Kerbside Collections

Overview

From September 2025, all properties in the Serviced Inzone have access to a consistent 3-bin, fortnightly kerbside collection service, included in your rates and delivered by Council’s regional contractor, Veolia.

Collections alternate between the green-lid FOGO bin one week and the red-lid landfill and yellow-lid recycling bins together the next.

06 - 09 Oct. From this week, πŸ”΄πŸŸ‘ red-lid landfill and yellow-lid recycling bins will be collected. Please place bins at the kerbside the night before, or by 6:00am on collection day.

  • Old bins can be dropped off at the Waste Management Centre for recycling.
  • Thu 09 October: East Ridgley (Circular Road) a final Council Waste only collection will still use old bins.

For questions about using the service, contact the NWRRR hotline: hello@nwrrr.com.au or (03) 6427 4646.

Collection Guidelines

Inzone:

  • Council supplies bins assigned to each property in the serviced Inzone (outside of CBD)

  • Only these assigned bins per property may be placed out for collection.

  • Place bins at the kerbside, by 6:00 am on collection day or the night before.

  • Don't overfill, ensure the lid can close, ideally keep the weight under 50kg

  • Place bins about 1m apart and clear of obstacles like cars, poles, and trees.

  • Return wheelie bins back within your property boundary within 24 hours of collection.

Bin Responsibilities

  • Keep your bins in good working order. If the lid, wheels, or axles are damaged, please report it to Veolia on (03) 6427 4646.

  • If your assigned bin was out by 6 am, but not collected, please contact Veolia directly on (03) 6427 4646.

Safety Tips

  • Pack waste loosely so bins can be emptied safely.

  • Do not place sharp or hazardous items in bins, to avoid damage or injury.

  • Let hot materials cool completely before placing them in the bin, to prevent fire hazards.

Looking After Yourself When Moving Bins

We care about your safety when moving bins to the kerb. Safe handling depends on the bin’s weight, the slope of the ground, and your own capacity and strength.

A few simple tips can make a big difference:

  • Know your limits

    • On flat, smooth ground, a wheelie bin should weigh no more than 70 kg (including the bin and contents).
    • On slopes, rough ground, or uneven surfaces, aim for a maximum of 30–50 kg.
  • Safer ways to move your bin

    • Whenever possible, push rather than pull; it’s easier on your body and gives you more control.
    • Use both hands, keep the bin close, and take your time.
    • Be extra careful on steep gradients and don’t overfill your bin.
    • Know your limits – everyone’s strength is different, so only move a bin when it feels safe for you.

These simple steps help protect you, your neighbours, and the crews who collect your waste.

Rethink Your Waste

Currently, everything in your red-lid bin goes to landfill, so the more we can divert to recycling, or FOGO, the better for the environment.

πŸ”— What’s in your bin?

Making small changes where you live, work and play, like separating food scraps, recycling right, or avoiding waste altogether, makes a big difference.

With the rollout of FOGO, we’re working towards 60% less waste going to landfill across the Cradle Coast.

Collection Zones

There are three zones defined: CBD, Inzone and Outzone

Burnie Kerbside-Collection-Zones(PDF, 354KB)

CBD properties

Council provides a weekly waste removal service for general waste and cardboard. In the CBD, businesses purchase and maintain their own bins. For more details, go to: CBD Waste Collections

Inzone

Council provides bins for a consistent 3-bin fortnightly kerbside Collection Service, available to all property types.

Outzone - Excluded

Properties outside the defined boundary will not be serviced by Council, so there will be no kerbside collection charge on rates. Residents are encouraged to arrange private waste collection with a commercial operator (see below), or take their waste to the waste management centre, 100kg free to residents with ID.

Extra Collections

Council provides a single, consistent 3-bin fortnightly kerbside collection service, included in rates, and available to all property types.

For those needing additional services beyond the fortnightly Council collection, private waste operators service all areas within Burnie.

These providers offer 240L and 660L bin or larger skip options for general waste, recycling, paper, secure shredding and cardboard collection.

Businesses, Industry, and other organisations are also advised to make contact with commercial waste operators for additional waste collections.
