100kg free for residents, easy, no need for tickets
From 1 July 2025.
We’ve listened to your feedback. The old tip voucher system had clear limitations, especially for tenants who often missed out. As part of the move to fortnightly waste collection, Council has replaced vouchers with a simpler, fairer system. All Burnie residents can now access the Waste Management Centre by simply showing proof of residence.
In addition to using the Resource Recovery Loop, residents can drop off up to 100kg of household landfill and green waste per visit at the Burnie Waste Management Centre free of charge each visit no need for tickets. You will only need to present your ID or something to prove your residency.
How it Works - weigh in/out
Before heading to the landfill shed, drive through the Resource Recovery Loop to drop off items like cardboard, cooking oil, steel, eWaste, Tip Shop resale items and other recyclables. Then weigh-in at the toll booth, drop off your landfill or green waste, and weigh-out on your way back.
If your load is under 100kg, it’s free. That’s 2-3 wheelie bins, or 8-10 bags (10kg each)
If over? You just pay for the extra e.g. 120kg = pay $4.90 for 20kg.
Fair use policy
This free service is here to help with everyday household waste but if it’s being used too often or in large amounts by a customer they may be requested to pay, or refused entry.
Businesses and organisations can also use the free recovery loop; landfill waste for non-residents is charged at $245/tonne (minimum charge $24.5)
Green waste fees at the waste centre have increased to reflect rising costs, aiming towards full cost recovery. From September, FOGO kerbside collection will make garden and food waste easier to manage from home.
We understand this change may affect small businesses and others who’ve used tokens in the past. We encourage properties to consider simple ways to reduce their green waste like mulching, choosing low-maintenance plants, and planning waste-smart gardens.
Conditions
Free disposal is for Burnie residents only.
Please be ready to show proof of residence (drivers licence).
Charges will apply for:
- Non-residents
- Commercial and business waste
- Tyres, mattresses, asbestos and others
Just to name a few, refer to the fees and charges for the full list.
