Living with Possums

Living with possums in towns and suburbs is a common part of life across Tasmania.

They often move into roofs, sheds, or backyards, and while they can be noisy at times, they are protected by law. This means you’re not allowed to harm them, catch them, or move them somewhere else without the right permit. Moving a possum might seem like a good idea, but it usually doesn’t survive because they are territorial and rely on familiar surroundings for food and shelter.

The best approach is to deter them to keep them out, like blocking entry points on your roof once they’ve left at night or giving them a nest box as another place to go. Learning to live alongside possums helps protect local wildlife while following wildlife protection laws.
