Plovers

During nesting season (typically June to August), Masked Lapwings (Plovers) can become highly protective of their eggs and chicks, often swooping to defend their territory. Understanding their behavior can help us coexist safely.

Masked lapwings are protected under the Nature Conservation Act 2002 and Nature Conservation (Wildlife) Regulations 2021. Any interference with the bird, nest or eggs is not permitted.

To deter plovers from nesting where they shouldn't, try the following strategies:

  1. Let your lawn grow: Avoid mowing during the early nesting phase, as plovers prefer short, clear lawns where they can spot predators easily.
  2. Increase your presence early: Spend time in your yard routinely from June through August. Safely and gently shooing them away before they lay eggs will discourage them from settling.
  3. Create visual barriers: Place temporary obstacles like outdoor furniture, wheelie bins, or pot plants around the lawn to break their line of sight. Shift these items every few days so the birds don't get used to them.
