Compliance Officer Development Services

Burnie City Council is seeking a proactive and community-focused Compliance Officer - Development Services to help ensure planning, building and environmental activities across the municipality are safe, lawful and compliant.

In this role, you will investigate potential breaches of legislation, carry out site inspections, prepare statutory notices and work constructively with residents, businesses and stakeholders to achieve positive, compliant outcomes for the long term.

About the role

As a key member of our Development Services team, you will:

  • Investigate planning, building and environmental compliance matters
  • Undertake site inspections and gather defensible evidence
  • Assess unauthorised use, development and building works
  • Prepare and issue statutory notices, enforcement actions and recommendations
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams, permit authorities and regulators
  • Engage respectfully with the community to resolve issues and promote awareness of statutory obligations

You will be approachable, organised and confident in managing competing priorities, while always acting in the best interests of Council and the Burnie community.

What you will bring

To be successful, you will have:

  • Certificate IV in Government Investigations (or equivalent)
  • At least three years’ experience in a regulatory or compliance environment
  • Sound knowledge of relevant Tasmanian legislation, including:
    • Land Use Planning and Approvals Act 1993
    • Building Act 2016
    • Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994
  • Strong investigation, analytical and record-keeping skills
  • Well-developed negotiation, customer service and conflict-management abilities
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Confidence using Microsoft Office 365 and learning new systems
  • A current driver licence
  • Experience in local government and knowledge of issues affecting councils is desirable.
