Assistant Accountant

Burnie City Council is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Accountant to join our Corporate Finance team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the delivery of high-quality financial services that support informed decision-making and positive outcomes for our community.

About the Role

As an Assistant Accountant, you will play a key role in delivering accurate, timely and efficient accounting services across the organisation. Working in a collaborative and supportive team, you will build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance financial processes and service delivery.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Maintain asset systems including registers, depreciation, valuations and capitalisation processes
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting and statutory financial reporting
  • Complete end-of-month processes such as accruals, reconciliations and journals
  • Prepare management reports and financial returns (GST, BAS, FBT)
  • Support treasury functions including cash management and investments
  • Contribute to audit processes and end-of-financial-year reporting
  • Assist with ERP and general ledger management
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement across finance operations

About You

You will be a proactive and reliable team member who thrives in a collaborative environment and can manage competing priorities effectively.

To be successful, you will have:

  • A degree or diploma in Accounting/Business (or working towards)
  • 1 - 5 years’ experience in an accounting role
  • Knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards and relevant tax legislation
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical capability
  • Well-developed communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Intermediate or advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Experience with ERP/accounting systems (local government experience desirable)
