FOGO Collection

IMG_3530.jpeg

From September 2025 Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) collections has been introduced in Burnie, joining other Councils in the Cradle Coast region.

Did you know? An audit found that around 40% of Burnie’s kerbside waste was food and garden organics. When sent to landfill, this material breaks down and produces methane, a harmful greenhouse gas. As an added incentive, the State Government has introduced a landfill waste levy, which not only encourages waste diversion but also funds innovation initiatives to reduce future waste.

â™ģī¸ Turning Waste into Opportunity! 🌱

By collecting FOGO separately where we live, work, and play, Burnie can divert around 1,250 tonnes of organic waste from landfill each year, cutting emissions, saving on levy costs, and creating a cleaner, greener future for our community.

Let's go FOGO!

Even if you already compost, have a work farm, or feed food scraps to your dogs and chickens

FOGO bins complement home composting by handling:

✔ī¸ Seasonal or larger quantities of garden organics
✔ī¸ Larger garden waste items
✔ī¸ Food scraps that are harder to compost at home, such as dairy, meat, bones, bread, grains, citrus, and kitchen oils

❌ No Bags – not even compostable bags. All bags are rejected because they can be mistaken for the wrong material, potentially introducing unwanted chemicals that affect soil quality.

Do NOT put in:

đŸšĢ Soil, large branches, heavy logs
đŸšĢ Concrete, rocks, ceramics
đŸšĢ Plastic, metal, nappies, textiles
