History of Burnie Library

• 1923: Establishment of Burnie’s First Library
  Burnie’s first library was established in a small upstairs room in the Town Hall on Cattley Street.

• 1975: Burnie Library Opens on Alexander Street
  On February 21, 1975, Burnie Library opened in a purpose-built facility on Alexander Street. Initially named the Hellyer Regional Library, it became a central resource for the north-west coast, supporting smaller local libraries.

• 1994: Rebranding
  The library was renamed Burnie Library to strengthen its local identity and reflect its role as Burnie’s central community resource.

• 2018: Integration with Libraries Tasmania
  Burnie Library became part of Libraries Tasmania, an integrated network providing public libraries, archives, and online services across the state.

• Modernization and Digital Transformation
  In recent years, Burnie Library has embraced digital transformation and inclusion, introducing digital lending, online services, and digital support. It offers free Wi-Fi, device charging, public computers, and a variety of community programs. The library has also become a vibrant venue for local events, workshops, and exhibitions, adapting to the evolving needs of the community.
