Resource Recovery and Transfer Station
Open 7 days a week, the centre offers various waste, green waste and recycling disposal, and is also home to the Burnie Resale Tip Shop.
Drop off is FREE for the following recyclable materials: steel, cardboard, e-waste, batteries, cooking oil, engine oil, BBQ gas bottles, light globes, paint tins, and commingled food/beverage containers, fire extinguishers, boat flares, vapes, Agvet chemical containers (call to register).
Before you come, refer to this guide for hints and a site map on how to SORT Your Load(PDF, 826KB).
100kg Free for Residents - it's easy, no tickets needed.
We’ve listened to your feedback that the old tip voucher system had limitations, especially for tenants who often missed out. To make things simpler and fairer, from 1 July 2025 all Burnie residents can now access the Waste Management Centre by showing proof of residence.
Each visit, you can drop off up to 100kg of household landfill or green waste free of charge.
How it Works
1. Drop off any recyclables first via the Resource Recovery Loop (e.g. cardboard, cooking oil, steel, e-waste, tip shop resale items).
2. Weigh in, drop off, and weigh out again at the toll booth.
3. If your load is under 100kg, it’s free! (around 2–3 wheelie bins or 8–10 bags).
If it’s over 100kg, you only pay for the extra (e.g. 120kg = $4.90 for 20kg).
Charges will apply for:
• Non-residents
• Commercial and business waste
• Tyres, mattresses, asbestos and others
Just to name a few, refer to the fees and charges for the full list.
Fair Use
This service is for everyday household waste. Frequent excessive use may result in charges or refusal. Refer to Fair Use Policy for more information.
Non-Residents, Businesses, and Organisations can deposit a reasonable amount at the free Recovery Loop, but landfill and green waste are charged at $245/tonne (min $24.50).
Conditions
Free disposal is for Burnie residents only.
Please be ready to show proof of residence (drivers licence).
Green Waste
Fees now better reflect the rising costs of managing, transporting, and processing green waste as we work towards full cost recovery. We know this change may affect some small businesses and others who’ve previously used tokens. The good news is that the new kerbside FOGO collection makes it easier to manage food and garden waste right at home. We also encourage everyone to find simple ways to reduce green waste, like mulching, choosing low-maintenance plants, and planning waste-smart gardens.
