Waste Centre FAQ’s

Why did the system change from tip vouchers?

The old voucher system has been replaced to make waste disposal simpler and fairer for everyone.

From 1 July 2025, residents can now dispose of up to 100kg of household landfill or green waste for free per visit by simply showing proof of residence — no vouchers needed.

This change was made in response to community feedback, particularly that the voucher system was:

  • Not always fair, especially for tenants who could miss out
  • Confusing to use and manage
  • Easy to lose or forget

The new approach is:

  • Easier for residents (no paperwork or tickets)
  • More consistent and fair across households
  • Faster and simpler at the gate

Why are tip fees so high?

What’s included in waste disposal fees?

Waste disposal fees at the Burnie Waste Management Centre cover the cost of managing waste from drop-off to final processing or disposal and include the following:

  1. Infrastructure costs: Building and maintaining the Waste Centre.
  2. Operational costs: Staff, equipment, and day-to-day site management.
  3. Transport costs: Loading and moving waste to landfill or recovery facilities.
  4. Landfill gate fees (life-cycle costs) Costs to operate, close, and rehabilitate landfill sites, including long-term environmental care.
  5. Processing costs (recycling and green waste) Sorting and processing materials, where costs are not fully offset by sale of recovered products.
  6. Waste Levy: A State Government charge that funds programs to reduce landfill and support reuse, recycling, and circular economy initiatives.
