Bins in Windy Weather

Windy weather can make waste collection challenging for everyone, but with some simple actions, Council, the collection contractor, and residents can work together to reduce litter and keep our streets tidy.

While we can’t control the weather, we can control how we prepare for it.

Residents play a key role by taking a few practical steps before collection day. If strong winds are forecast, it’s best to set an alarm and place bins out in the morning rather than the night before to reduce the chance of them being blown over.

• Place heavier items at the bottom of the bin helps to weigh it down, and
• If the bin isn’t full, waiting until the next collection may be the better option.
• Avoid overfilling
• Ensure the lid is fully closed and secured to prevent contents from escaping.
• Coordinate with neighbours for optimal timing and to keep an eye out on collection day.
• Bring bins in as soon as possible after they are emptied to prevent from blowing over when empty
• Consider taking waste to the Burnie Waste Management Centre, where up to 100 kg of general waste per visit can be disposed of free of charge with photo ID, especially when bins are full or windy weather is expected.
• use Snap Send Solve or call Council to Report damaged bins, or if litter has spread after collection so it can be quickly addressed.
• Call the collection hotline (03) 6427 4646 where the contractor can support residents by providing collection time estimates on windy days, where possible, to limit exposure to high winds.

Together, through shared awareness and small changes in routine on windy days, we can minimise litter, protect the environment, and keep Burnie looking its best.
