Cats
Owning a cat in Tasmania is rewarding but comes with important responsibilities. Owners must provide food, water, shelter, and take steps to ensure their cat does not harm native wildlife or cause a nuisance to others.
Keeping cats contained at home is strongly encouraged, as it protects their health, reduces vet costs, and helps avoid harm to wildlife or conflict with neighbours. You can check and update your cat’s microchip details at: petaddress.com.au to help ensure your pet can be returned to you if it goes missing.
Cat Management Act and Regulations
The Tasmanian Government provides important information about responsible cat ownership including information on breeding, selling, giving away or buying cats, desexing and microchipping, multiple cat permits, and managing roaming or nuisance cats. To learn more, visit the Tassie Cat website for helpful resources and advice in Tasmania.
If you have concerns about the treatment or welfare of an animal please contact the RSPCA cruelty helpline on 1300 139 947
Cat adoptions and surrenders
Just Cats Tasmania has opened at the Burnie Dogs’ Home site, bringing local cat adoptions to our community. Donations of wet cat food, bleach, paper plates, and paper towels are welcome. Learn more at
justcats.org.au. Currently, the Burnie site cannot accept surrenders, if you need to re-home a cat, please contact your local vet or the main Just Cats facility in Longford. Foster carers are also needed in the North-West. If you have a cat-friendly home and some extra love to give, reach out to see how you can help.
