Notable Tennis Players

The North-West Coast of Tasmania has produced several tennis players who reached the sport’s highest level, competing on the world stage at Grand Slam tournaments.

Richard Fromberg, born in Ulverstone, enjoyed a successful professional career during the 1990s. He competed in all four Grand Slam tournaments, including Wimbledon, where he reached the third round in 1994, and represented Australia in Davis Cup ties.

Simon Youl, from Symmons Plains, was a prominent Australian player in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He played in all four Grand Slam tournaments and achieved his best Wimbledon result in 1988, reaching the fourth round. Following his playing career, Youl returned to Tasmania and has contributed to the development of tennis as a coach.
