World's largest battery-electric ship The China Zorrilla is on her way aboard heavy lift ship ‘Black Marlin’July 2026. The 130m fully battery-electric ferry built by Incat carries 2,000 passengers and 225 vehicles, powered by 5,000 lithium-ion batteries across four battery rooms. Operating between Argentina and Uruguay, it has 90-minute range with 40-min fast charging. Incat plans to scale production to 2-4 ships per year.
Minna Road Truck Wash Truck Wash and Effluent Disposal Facility is now complete April 2026, replacing the end-of-life Cooee site. Delivered as part of the $4.7M Braddon Truck Wash program, it is the first of four facilities across North-West Tasmania.The project supports livestock and commercial transport operators with modern washdown infrastructure, improving biosecurity, efficiency and regional freight operations.
Wivenhoe Underpass Bass Highway Transport Services Tasmania completed repairs and strengthening of the South Burnie–Wivenhoe eastbound rail underpass on the Bass Highway between Stowport Rd and Clarke St in October 2025, improving safety, durability and reliability. Follow-up works in March 2026 relocated safety barriers and widened the Heybridge-bound road edge to improve cyclist safety .
Jackson Motor Company Camdale Expansion The Jackson Motor Company expansion at Camdale is strengthening Burnie’s role as a regional automotive hub. In 2024 following acquisition of the Motors brand, JMC relocated South Burnie operations to Camdale.Approved in 2024, new Hyundai and Nissan showrooms opened in Apr 2026, alongside 50 car parks at the 3000m2 site opened in 2008 for Kia, Mitsubishi, Subaru, and Suzuki.
DT Infrastructure re-railing Tasmania’s freight network Stage 4 of the Tasmanian Freight Rail Revitalisation Program is improving freight reliability for the North West as part of an $81.6 million Australian Government investment. Works across Tasmania’s rail network include replacing 6,500 sleepers and renewing 11.2km of track. Delivered through 2026, upgrades will strengthen connections to key freight routes, including to the Port of Burnie.
Mood Food and Fuel service hub Mood Food Convenience store and fuel service hub opened on Marine Terrace, South Burnie in April 2024, redeveloping the former United petrol station site owned by Bennett’s Petroleum. The 24/7 service for North-West Coast travellers stop created 49 local jobs and includes a KFC drive-thru restaurant. Expanded services further in March 2025 with the opening of a bottle shop.
North West Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Upgrade State Growth Transport Services is expanding road safety infrastructure across North West Tasmania through Stage 1 CCTV and fibre works. In February 2026, Burnie City Council upgraded the MSCP CCTV network, installing 63 high-resolution cameras and increasing coverage by 20%, with Tasmania Police granted 24/7 access. Additional upgrades at Burnie Park, Alexander Street and the Burnie Yacht Club
Ridgley Highway - South of Ridgley Roads Tas completed repairs and strengthening of a section of the Ridgley Highway between Ridgley and Highclere Feb 2026. Delivered under the Tasmanian Government’s Freight Capacity Upgrade Program (FCUP), the works improved road safety, pavement strength and freight efficiency, supporting more reliable transport for regional industries and road users.
Burnie Medicare Mental Health Centre Opened in Feb 2026 at an interim site at 52-56 Bass Highway in Cooee, alongside the Burnie GP Super Clinic. providing free walk-in mental health support for adults without the need for appointments or referrals. Operated by Stride and funded by the Australian Government through Primary Health Tasmania, the centre is part of a $225 million national expansion of Medicare Mental Health Centres.
Menai Family Friendly Entertainment Centre The Menai Hotel in South Burnie has expanded its family-friendly, all-weather entertainment. Following the successful installation of a 9‑hole mini-golf course, the venue added two indoor golf simulators in Jan 2026, complementing arcade games, pool tables, and dining spaces. These upgrades strengthen the hotel’s appeal as a social and entertainment hub for locals and visitors.
Marist’s New Technology Centre The new state-of-the-art MDT Centre provides an inspiring space for students to learn, create, innovate and explore. The $8 million facility features modern technology and hands-on learning spaces, supporting expanded educational opportunities and preparing students for future careers. Construction was completed in January 2026, with $750,000 provided provided through a Federal Government grant.
Burnie Golf Club Renovations Jan 2026, Burnie Golf Club completed key renovations, including a new golf simulator with online bookings and an upgraded, accessible buggy shed. Hydro Tasmania EOI - new wind and solar projects Hydro Tasmania is seeking new wind and solar projects producing up to 1,500 GWh annually through commercial offtake agreements, operational in the near term. Driven by the Marinus Link project connecting Tasmania to the mainland grid, the call aims to diversify energy sources, support grid stability, and boost Tasmania’s role in Australia’s renewable energy transition. EOI closes 5 December.
Seaview Avenue, Burnie - Reinstatement Works TasWater reinstated the pathway between Seaview Avenue and Amelia Street in November 2025, following a burst water main in April 2025 that caused flooding and property damage. Emergency repairs were carried out, and the pathway is now fully restored. The water main is scheduled for full replacement in the future to prevent further issues.
Wild on West mini golf upgrades Wild on West invested in new attractions for Halloween 2025, featuring a Spookville mini-golf course with a witches’ room, a cuddly orangutan live show alongside the animatronic T. rex. Guests can now explore Ice Age, African wildlife scenes, walk among dinosaurs, meet pygmy goats, alpacas, and parrots. With a food van and tearoom, the upgrades boost its interactive, family-friendly appeal.
North West Regional Resource Recovery (NWRRR) Project Led by the Cradle Coast Waste Management Group with nine councils and managed by Dulverton Waste Services, this program uses the state waste levy to deliver FOGO, recycling, and recovery education. In 2025, activities included FOGO rollout to Burnie and Circular Head in September, bin checks Oct-Dec, and household hazardous waste and tyre amnesty events in November. Taswater UV Disinfection Treatment Installation Stage 2A of the UV disinfection treatment at East Ridgley was completed in October 2025 following essential safety upgrades. Access to the eastern side of Pet Dam off Circular Road was temporarily closed during works. The project enhances water safety, reliability, and service, ensuring the local community benefits from improved drinking water quality and infrastructure resilience.
Complete Care Pharmacy Jack Muir Wilson, Kath Witherden, and Heather Wilde have transformed the former Contel Communications site into a 524 m² Complete Care Pharmacy, four times larger than their previous store. The $1.2 million project opened on 20 October 2025, featuring modern health services, a Packzilla dispensing robot, and two disability parking spaces right outside, strengthening community care in the CBD.
Montello Primary School Upgrade Stage 1 Stage one of the $12.45 million was completed in October 2025, delivering refurbished learning spaces and amenities, plus a new teaching kitchen, canteen, and student dining room. A new playground has also been installed under the $10 million Playground and Sports Court Upgrades Program. All remaining works at Montello Primary are scheduled for completion in late 2026.
Youth2Independence Y2I Youth Foyer Stubbs Constructions has completed a $14.2 million, 25-bed facility in North-West Tasmania to provide supported accommodation, education, and employment opportunities for young people experiencing homelessness. Wurayni officially opened on 8 August 2025, the facility is located beside the Burnie TasTAFE campus and Hellyer College, and is operated by Youth, Family and Community Connections (YFCC).
Woolworths Upper Burnie Renovation The $7.1 M renovation of Woolworths Upper Burnie was completed in June 2025, featuring a refreshed store layout, improved accessibility, energy-efficient upgrades, and enhanced fresh produce areas. New offerings include Direct-to-Boot pickup and hybrid checkouts, delivering a faster, more convenient shopping experience for the local community.
Tas Networks Community Battery Pilot Tasmania’s first community battery was installed at Burnie Community House, Shorewell Park, completed in mid-2025. It stores excess solar energy and releases it during peak demand, supporting local energy needs and grid stability. Community sessions were held, with Council leasing the land in Nov 2024. A mural by Damian “Gadget” Rossiter celebrates native wildlife and community spirit.
Burnie Trunk Main Renewal - TasWater TasWater replaced the 75-year-old water main from Mount Road, Burnie, to Three-Mile Line with a new 4 km DN 375/450 main. Pipes were joined via butt welding, mostly open trench through farmland and council land, with HDD under roads. New hydrants, valves, and connections were installed, and pavements reinstated. Completed mid‑2025, the upgrade improves water reliability for the growing community.
Dynamite Boxing and Arrange Support A community hub has been established in Thirkell st Cooee Jun 2025.Dynamite Boxing offers an inclusive and diverse environment for all ages and abilities, with beginner and advanced technique classes, circuit training and a supportive fitness community. Alongside, Arrange Support delivers purpose-built NDIS facilities promoting independence, wellbeing and community participation.
QantasLink Dash 8 Q400 Aircraft QantasLink introduced the 74-seat Dash 8 Q400 to Burnie (Wynyard) Airport, on 30 Mar 2025 replacing 50-seat Q300 aircraft and adding ~6,000 seats annually on the Melbourne route. Apron upgrades were completed to support the larger planes through $365k grant from the Tas Government for bay upgrades and $330k from the Aus Government for runway surface treatment under the Regional Airports Program
Homes Tasmania Modhomes Six two-bedroom modular units, with an estimated cost of over $1 million, were completed in February 2025 by Podmatrix in Shorewell Park. The use of modular construction enabled faster project delivery, supporting the provision of quality housing and helping to get Tasmanians into homes sooner.
Burnie Ambulance Super Station Completed in November 2024, the $12.4 million Burnie Ambulance Super Station on Brickport Road is now operational and serving the community. The modern facility provides expanded capacity for emergency vehicles, improved staff training areas and better support for local paramedics, strengthening emergency response and health services across the North West.
Tasrail Shiploader Project Since opening in October 2024, the shiploader has loaded 320,000 tonnes across 33 vessels. The project employed ~140 people, with hoppers fabricated by The Engineering Company and delivery led by COVA Hayward. It includes the replacement of reclaim, wharf gallery and conveyor infrastructure, an upgraded HV electrical system, and installation of a new shiploader delivering double capacity 2200T/hr
One North Terrace Visitor Accommodation One North Terrace in Burnie is a $12 million, 30-room boutique hotel that opened September 2024. Developed by Fairbrother and the Elphinstone Group and managed by 1834 Hotels, the project adds quality visitor accommodation in the CBD. The hotel supports domestic and international business and leisure visitors, while boosting local jobs, tourism capacity and economic confidence in Burnie
Dulverton Food and Organics (FOGO) Facility The $32 million Dulverton Regional Organics Facility started operating in July 2024. Supporting FOGO services for Cradle Coast households and processing organic waste from aquaculture, dairy and brewing industries. The facility diverts around 7,500 tonnes of waste from landfill each year and produces compost for local nurseries and farms, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Cam River Bridge Replacement Transport Tasmania has replaced the Cam River Bridge on the Bass Highway and installed new traffic signals at the Murchison Highway junction serving Camdale and Somerset. Delivered as part of the Bass Highway Action Plan, the project improves safety, traffic flow and reliability on this key freight and commuter corridor. Construction was completed in June 2024.
Agricultural Training Centre of Excellence In September 2023, TasTAFE opened a $5 million Agricultural Training Centre of Excellence at Freer Farm, Burnie. 2024 upgrades include Stockyards, irrigation, precision agriculture, cropping tunnels, biosecurity, and training simulators. The modern facility provides industry-relevant skills and training through a farm-based learning centre, fostering collaboration with the sector.
