a) Active Transport Strategy
The Institute of Sensible Transport has been engaged to undertake the development of an Active Transport Strategy for Burnie. The Draft Strategy has been received by council and reviewed by Council and the Active Transport Strategy Working Group. The Strategy will now commence its second round of consultation.
b) Futuna Avenue and West Park Grove Roundabout – Contract 2718
Construction of the roundabout is complete. The roundabout was sealed and line marked in early May and appears to be operating well.
c) Oonah Road – Guide River Bridge Replacement – Contract 2717
Construction of the new bridge is now complete, and road has reopened. Minor shoulder works on the approaches to be completed.
d) Netball Centre – Court Resurfacing – Contract 2715
The blue acrylic surfacing has been completed on 3 of 6 courts, with the remaining 3 courts and surrounds to be completed in warmer months and after the conclusion of the current netball season.
e) McKenna Park Renovations
All contracted works have been completed, and the remaining funds were used for additional solar installations.
f) Bitumen Surfacing Services 2024-2025 – Contract 2713
The following sites have been completed by the nominated contractors for resealing: Bathurst Street, Lyons Street, Manuka Drive, McGaw Place, Mount Street, Rouse Place, Sanderson Place, Three Mile Line Road, Wellington Street, Woniora Road, Malunna Crescent, Tolunah Street, Oonah Road and Upper Natone Road.
g) Burnie Cultural Precinct – BAFC Redevelopment (Stage 2) – Contract 2711
The atrium is close to completion. We have experienced challenges with the glazing installation to the walkway and stair balustrades, which should be resolved in July. The lift shaft and walkways have been tiled in bluestone, and work on the Atrium floor is nearing completion. The lift has been commissioned. The Canopies and Moveart were installed in mid-June. The Long Room is nearly complete. Display joinery is completed, and the installation of interpretative elements has commenced.
The northern extension to the Long Room and Art Gallery has commenced. Steelwork is erected, and the ground floor slab is poured. Services rough-in is nearing completion, with the plasterer also commencing on-site. Large glazing panels to the north are scheduled for installation mid-July. The stage and loading dock in the Civic Plaza to the south of the Town Hall will be ready for a concrete slab pour in early July.
h) Bitumen Surfacing Services 2023-2024 – Contract 2705
Ocean View Lane reseal has been completed, and speed humps reinstated.
i) Mount Street/Three Mile Line Road Roundabout Construction – Contract 2703
TasNetworks are currently undertaking design for the lighting of the intersection. Works will be completed in the new financial year.
j) Burnie Cultural Precinct – BAFC Redevelopment (Stage 1) – Contract 2694
This Contract has now reached the final completion. The final completion report for Federal funding was submitted and accepted by the Federal Government in early May 2025.
k) Coastal Pathway – Contract 2702
Construction of the pathway and erosion works are now complete, and the official opening occurred on the 24 October 2024.
l) Burnie Gateway Project
Site works are now complete, and final reports for the close of the project will be submitted and completed by June 2025.
m) City Centre Urban Plan
The Draft Urban Plan was adopted by Council at the February 2025 Council meeting. The Urban Plan working group has been established, and has had two meetings to date.
n) Flood Recovery Projects
Upper Natone Road – Horseshoe Bend
The road remains under traffic management with a 5T load limit still in place. The final design for the new road alignment requires land acquisition. Consultants are negotiating with affected property owners.
o) Reserve Footpath Renewal
All sections of the path identified in the design have now been constructed. Bridge construction will be completed in the new financial year.
p) Footpath Replacement Program
The contractor, Hardings Group, has completed Burnell Street and Hale Street.
q) Footpath Network Gap Program
The following sites were completed under the program Scarfe Street and East Cam Road
