National Day of Mourning – 22 January 2026
Published on 22 January 2026
Burnie City Council joins the rest of Australia in observing a National Day of Mourning to honour the victims, their families, and all those affected by the tragic attack at Bondi Beach.
The theme chosen by the Bondi Chabad community —
“Light will win, a gathering of unity and remembrance”
— reminds us that even in the darkest times, compassion and solidarity can prevail.
At 7.01pm AEDT, residents are invited to observe a minute of silence to remember the 15 innocent lives lost, and to reflect on the values of kindness and unity.
Council encourages acts of remembrance and goodwill, whether that be spending time with family and friends, checking in on neighbours, supporting local businesses, or leaving a candle at a window or doorstep as a symbol of solidarity.
Burnie Council flags will be flown at half-mast as a sign of respect and remembrance, with the building being lit up in white as a symbol of light as we move forward as a nation.
As a community, we pause to remember, to mourn, and to reaffirm our shared commitment for light to triumph over darkness.
