Bushfire season runs from 1 November to 31 March. Whether you live in Burnie’s urban areas, on the outskirts or in a more rural part of the municipality, now is the time to prepare your property and household.

Maintaining your property, making a bushfire plan and knowing where to find reliable information can help you make informed decisions when conditions change.

Prepare your property

Regular property maintenance can help reduce potential fuel for a bushfire around your home.

Before and during bushfire season, take time to:

  • Keep grass short and maintained.
  • Clear dry leaves and debris from gutters, roofs, decks and around your home.
  • Prune shrubs and manage overgrown vegetation.
  • Move firewood, mulch and other flammable materials away from your house.
  • Keep access to your property clear for emergency services.

Make a bushfire plan

Think about what you and your household will do if a bushfire threatens your area. Your plan should consider when you will leave, where you will go, how you will get there and what you need to take.

Remember to include children, pets and livestock in your planning, and consider alternative routes in case roads are blocked.

Tasmania Fire Service recommends leaving early as the safest option.
