Burnie Honours Community Champions at the 2025 Recognition Awards
Last night, the Burnie community came together in celebration at the 2025 Community Recognition Awards - an inspiring evening that honoured the remarkable individuals and community events that are making a lasting difference in our city. From volunteers and advocates to trailblazing young leaders, this year’s recipients exemplify the spirit of Burnie.
Citizen of the Year – Judy Huett
Judy Huett was honoured for her decades-long advocacy for disability rights and inclusion. Her work has influenced local and national policies, and even reached international audiences, including the United Nations. As Co-Chair of the National Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health and a member of multiple advisory councils, Judy’s leadership continues to empower people with disabilities to speak up, be seen, and be included.
Senior Citizen of the Year – Ant Dry
A pillar of Burnie’s cultural and economic life, Ant Dry was recognised for his leadership of the Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden and his contributions to Business North West. His stewardship has helped secure major funding, support volunteers, and enhance Burnie’s profile. Ant’s quiet, consistent leadership has strengthened community connections and fostered economic growth.
Volunteer of the Year – Carmen Guard
Carmen Guard’s warm-hearted leadership has transformed the Thursday night Vinnies Community Meal into a cherished weekly event. Her creativity, kindness, and tireless commitment to building community has made the dinners a beacon of connection and joy. She also supports foster children through Hope in a Suitcase and volunteers in the Vinnies office, continuing her impact across multiple fronts.
Young Citizen of the Year – Alyssia Kennedy
Alyssia Kennedy is already creating a legacy of impact through her Life After School program, which teaches essential life skills to young people across Tasmania. As a national ABC Trailblazer and parliamentary pitch speaker, Alyssia is a dynamic leader and role model. Her efforts ensure future generations are better prepared for the realities of adulthood.
Community Event of the Year – Rally Tasmania
Rally Tasmania roared back into Burnie thanks to the determination of Eddie Maguire, Nathan Newton and Lee Marshall. The event attracted record-breaking crowds and showcased Burnie to motorsport fans across the country. Their teamwork, extensive volunteer hours, and local leadership made Rally Tasmania a triumph, earning praise as one of the best events in the sport’s national calendar.
