Solar pools and battery storage across Braddon

Batteries to store excess solar at sporting fields, more EV charging, and the community pools going electric are just some of the projects the Albanese Government is backing with its $100 million Community Energy Upgrades Fund.

The Albanese Government is working with councils so they can save on their bills and invest more into their communities.

In the second round of the fund, 66 local governments across Australia will receive $50 million in grants, empowering them to bring down their energy bills for good through energy efficiency and electrification upgrades to community facilities.

In Braddon, Latrobe Council and Burnie City Council will share in $1,895,600 to upgrade much-loved community facilities with energy-efficient technology, with benefits to be enjoyed by our community.

These projects include:

  • Burnie City Council – Burnie Aquatic Centre: Electrification of Pool Heating System ($1,838,100)
Burnie City Council will electrify its aquatic centre heating systems, replacing gas with electric heat pumps. Electrification of the gas heating system will materially reduce greenhouse gas emissions produced at Burnie Aquatic Centre in addition to significantly benefiting the community through the provision of more reliable and operationally cost-effective infrastructure in the long term.
  • Latrobe Council – Latrobe Pool: Cutting Emissions, Boosting Efficiency ($57,500)
This project will upgrade the Latrobe Hydrotherapy Pool’s heat pump to a high-efficiency model and install rooftop solar panels at the Latrobe Swim Centre.

In this second round, one-off grants of between $25,000 and $2.5 million have been awarded to projects on a merit basis, with local governments matching funding.

Anne Urquhart MP Federal Member for Braddon:
"These upgrades are a win-win for our community. They cut emissions, slash energy bills, and make sure facilities like our pools and sporting centres remain affordable and sustainable for years to come. The Albanese Government is proud to back local councils in Braddon as they lead the way in clean energy and climate action."

Burnie Mayor Teeny Brumby:
“This upgrade positions Burnie to take advantage of the cleaner, more efficient technologies shaping Australia’s future. Shifting our Aquatic Centre to electric heat pumps reduces emissions and reduces costs, allowing us to reinvest more into community services. We thank the Albanese Government for this tremendous support to help our city make this transition.”
