Local Government Elections



Local Government elections are held every four years. The next elections will be held by postal ballot in October 2022.

Voting in Tasmanian local government elections is now compulsory and you must be enrolled to vote by 8 September to have your say.

Who can vote at a local government election?

Anyone who is enrolled on the state electoral roll for an address in the Burnie municipal area, is automatically enrolled for the municipal area as well.

Other people who own or occupy land in the municipal area, or are the nominated representatives of a corporate body that owns or occupies land in the municipal area, are also eligible to enrol, but must lodge an application with the General Manager.


General Manager's Roll

You may be eligible for the General Manager's Local Government Roll in Burnie if:

  • you are a resident in the Burnie municipality but not eligible for the state electoral roll (eg. you are not an Australian Citizen)
  • you own or occupy land in Burnie but do not live in Burnie (eg. you lease a shop or own a shack)
  • you are the nominated representative of a corporate body that owns or occupies land in Burnie

Enrolment forms (provided below) may be mailed or hand-delivered to Customer Service at Burnie City Council. Please note that forms can not be submitted online.

Enrolment on the General Manager's Roll is not automatic, but requires you to register using the request form below.

Saturday 3 September - Notice of election published

Monday   5 September - Candidate nominations open

Thursday 8 September - Electoral rolls close (GMs roll)

Monday 19 September - Candidate nominations close


Tuesday 20 September - Announcement of nominations

Monday    3 October      - Polling opens, postal ballot packs delivered to electors

Tuesday 25 October      - Close of polls
