Shorewell Playground Concept Designs Consultation with the Community
Published on 11 December 2025
Burnie City Council invites community input to help select the new playground design for Shorewell Park. This exciting new playground will create a space where community can come together, play, and thrive.
At the December 2025 Meeting, Council awarded the Shorewell Playground contract to Active Areas, who have supplied four concept designs. Council is now seeking community views on these designs to help guide the selection of play equipment.
Mayor of Burnie, Teeny Brumby emphasised the significance of this project, stating,
“This is a genuinely exciting opportunity. For years we’ve heard the community say they want more chances to have a real say well, this is one of them. We’re asking you to jump in, look at the four concept designs, and tell us what you think. Please don’t miss this chance and later feel like your voice wasn’t heard, we’re inviting your input right now! This playground will be built for your families, your kids, your neighbourhood so we need your voice to shape it. Have your say and help us choose the design that will bring joy to Shorewell for years to come.”

Background:
Burnie City Council is designing a roadmap for the stageable upgrades and implementation of Burnie's parks and playgrounds through the creation of five key 'connected parks'.
These connected parks are built upon existing assets and features, establishing a hierarchy and strengthening the sense of place and uniqueness of Burnie.
It is suggested that the network of five connected parks, each have their own unique design themes:
- Shorewell Park – Rural Theme
- View Road Reserve – Adventure Theme
- Burnie Park – Nature Theme
- Waterfront – Marine Theme
The Shorewell Playground is the first of the four parks to be upgraded, and has secured a project budget of $1,500,000. This funding is comprised of a $1,000,000 contribution from the State Government, $400,000 from the Local Government of Tasmania’s Open Spaces Grant and $100,000 of Council own source funding.
The reserve is in a built-up residential area, next to the popular Burnie Community House. It will provide not only a safe space for children to play, ride bikes and enjoy the outdoors, but it will also deliver a place for community markets and events.
