Burnie City Council has received a development application detailing design concepts for the new mental health precinct at the North West Regional Hospital (NWRH) in Burnie.

The Precinct will include a 22-bed inpatient unit to replace the ageing Spencer Clinic, offering a modern, recovery-focused, and therapeutic environment for people experiencing mental illness.

With the necessary approvals, construction of the new Mental Health Precinct is expected to start in late 2026 and be completed by 2028.

The development application will be open for public exhibition once the preliminary assessment is completed and any required additional information has been provided.

The State Government has also released that planning is progressing well for Stage 1 of the NWRH Masterplan. This includes:
✅ The new medical inpatient unit
✅ The link bridge that will unlock the southern side of Hospital Street
✅ Works to the main entry
✅ A new transit lounge
✅ Car parking improvements
