Burnie LGBTIQA+ Advisory Group
Published on 12 May 2025
At its 29 April Council meeting, Burnie City Council formally determined to establish a BurnieLGBTIQA+ Advisory Group and create an associated action plan.
The motion put forward by Deputy Mayor Giovanna Simpson was passed 8-1.
"As a Council we have an important role in ensuring everyone in the City of Burnie is safe and supported, feels they belong, is able to participate fully in the community and is treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity," Cr. Simpson said.
Council will form a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ+) advisory group in the early 2025-26 financial year. It will be made up of LGBTIQA+ people who live in our municipality, Equality Tasmania, Council representatives and services such as Burnie Works. The group will then develop a draft action plan to go to Council for discussion and approval.
The development of an LGBTIQA+ action plan will provide a road map for addressing discrimination and achieving better inclusion, it will raise awareness and improve general outcomes in areas such as mental health, education and safety.
Council will be seeking expressions of interests for the LGBTIQ+ advisory group within the coming weeks.
Burnie City Council is committed to creating a community which is inclusive, safe, welcoming and respectful for all.
