In 1871, tin was discovered at Waratah, making it the world's richest tin mine at that time. This discovery triggered a boom in Burnie, as the minerals were transported by rail to Burnie Port and then shipped to smelters. This influx of wealth contributed to the development of Burnie's impressive Federation architecture, which emerged between 1890 and 1915.

 

A self-guided walking tour has been created to interpret various buildings in Burnie's city centre and nearby residential areas, highlighting significant Federation structures in both domestic and civic architecture. For more information about the trail, you can download the
