Driving in Tasmania

In Tasmania, Australians drive on the left-hand side of the road, which may take some adjustment if you’re used to driving on the right. Roads across the state are generally in good condition, and major routes are well signposted, however it is important to drive to the conditions, especially if wet, icy or visibility is impaired.

Speed limits and distances are shown in kilometres, with limits varying from 50 km/h in residential and built-up areas to 110 km/h on highways and freeways. Always follow posted speed signage, as limits can change depending on conditions and location.

No drink driving is enforced in Tasmania. Police conduct random roadside breath tests, and the legal blood alcohol limit is 0.05% there are penalties for exceeding this limit.
