Bass Highway - Pedestrian Crossings
We are improving pedestrian crossing facilities across the Bass Highway at Ocean Vista and Somerset.
About the project
The Department of State Growth completed a planning study in 2018 along the Bass Highway between Cooee and Wynyard to identify safety, travel time and reliability improvements on the corridor. A number of projects were identified as a result, including the addition of pedestrian crossings facilities at Ocean Vista and Somerset.
The current pedestrian crossings are separated by large distances and do not offer enough road crossing opportunities for pedestrians. Based on the results of the planning study, seven locations for pedestrian crossings facility improvements were identified.
The aim is to increase safety and reliability for pedestrians and to meet the expected demand from the future Coastal Pathway project by reducing the number of unprotected highway crossings.
The seven identified works are:
- A pedestrian island east of the intersection of Raglan Steet and the Bass Highway
- A pedestrian island adjacent to the intersection of Wragg Street and the Bass Highway
- A pedestrian island connecting Elizabeth Street to Bells Parade
- A pedestrian island connecting Athol Street and Bells Parade
- Modification of the traffic island east of East Cam Road
- Modification of the traffic island outside the "Youngs Veggie Shed” west of Kennedy Street
- A pedestrian island between Fidler Street and the Burnie Ocean View Motel.

Timing
We are currently in the detailed design phase of the project and expect to start construction in 2024.
Funding
This project has received a combined funding amount of $1.25 million. The Australian Government has committed $1 million towards the project and the Tasmanian Government has committed $250,000.
