The State Government funded gateway initiative has been launched to assist Councils along the North West to beautify and improve the visual aesthetic of the entrances to their cities, for the local community and visitors to the area.

The objective of the Gateway Commission is to “beautify key entrances to the City of Burnie” through the design and installation of creative treatments/features that will instantly identify Burnie city, promote a sense of arrival, complement existing infrastructure, and convey a clear civic identity.

Three gateway locations will be identified at the entrances to the pataway / Burnie CBD to celebrate the City’s unique identity and vibrant, inclusive community.

Artists responding to the brief(PDF, 308KB) will be encouraged to explore the notion of a ‘gateway’ through their creative process. Concepts may include, but are not limited to, 2D and/or 3D elements/structures, and landscaping.

The Pataway / Burnie Gateway Commission has been developed specifically to involve artists from the early phases of the project and will include engaging closely with the Traditional Custodians and pataway / Burnie community to understand the community’s aspirations, vision and love for their city.

This will involve the selected artists/artist teams delivering community engagement workshops that will assist the artists/artist teams to develop concept designs for the gateway experiences at the three selected locations.

With Council’s endorsement of the concept designs one artist/artist team will then be further engaged to develop detailed designs, followed by fabrication and installation of the gateways with support from GHD.

Project Outline

Stage 1: Community engagement workshops

Stage 1 will involve up to three artists/artist teams being engaged to deliver community engagement workshops with guidance from the GHD project team to inform the following two stages of the project.

The focus of these workshops will be to provide participatory engagement opportunities for the pataway / Burnie community to share their vision, aspirations and love for the City that will assist the artist/artist teams to develop concept designs for the identified gateways in Stage 2.

A more detailed Gateway Artist Brief will be supplied to the selected artists/artist teams at completion of Stage 1 outlining the gateway locations and necessary design considerations.

Stage 2: Gateway concept designs

Upon completion of the community engagement workshops in Stage 1, the selected artists/artist teams will be invited to prepare gateway concept designs for all three gateway locations including an indicative budget, drawings and 3D maquette that will be presented to Council and the GHD project team. This stage will involve workshopping ideas with the GHD project team.

Stage 3: Gateway detailed design

Following presentation of the concept designs one artist/artist team will be selected to progress their concept designs through detailed design with support from the GHD project team.

Stage 4: Delivery

Upon approval of the Detailed Design the selected artist/artist team will then be responsible for progressing the detailed design through fabrication and installation of the three gateways ready for handover to Burnie City Council by March 2024.
