Preventing Illness

Communicable diseases are spread from one person to another in a number of ways, such as through air or body fluids.

As part of Council's role in public health, we administer a range of state legislation, and also provide advice to the community on aspects of public health and managing risk.

Immunisations

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way of protecting people against harmful diseases before they come into contact with them. We undertake the school based immunisation programs on behalf of the State Government.

Sharps Disposal

Council operates a sharps disposal container exchange service during business hours for diabetics and home-care patients residing in Burnie.

Skin Penetration Activities

Skin penetration activities which require a public health high risk permit include ear and body piercing, tattooing and acupuncture.

Regulated Systems Cooling or Warm Water

Annual registration is required for all cooling towers and warm water systems to ensure they are operated and maintained in such a manner that they do not cause legionella.

Recreational Water Quality

Council monitors the water quality of frequently used swimming areas such as beaches and creeks as well as public swimming pools.

The primary piece of legislation that relates directly to public health is the Public Health Act 1997. A range of legally enforceable guidelines have been developed under the Act that can be directly accessed via the Department of Health.
