Burnie Council

The Burnie City Council's role is to undertake and to be accountable for the planning, direction and management of resources to meet the present and future needs of the community.

The City of Burnie is administered by a progressive team of democratically elected Aldermen (9) and appointed professional staff.

The Burnie City Council's emphasis is on people - servicing their requirements both for today and into the future. The major objective is to manage the financial and physical resources of the city to ensure efficient services at the highest possible level.

The Council's statement of purpose, or reason for being, is to "provide leadership, services and facilities that make a meaningful difference to people's lives".

The Council's policy of community consultation and involvement is aimed at making Burnie a better place to live and work. Residents and visitors are welcome to participate in the activities of Council and your involvement in community affairs is both encouraged and greatly appreciated.

The Council's vision is "Burnie a vibrant community working together to create a prosperous future".

The principles, or shared beliefs, that we are committed to and which will guide our decisions, services and allocation of resources are:

  • Leadership - governing for the whole community and exercising leadership with care and diligence.
Access, equity and social justice - delivering accessible services and facilities while balancing diverse community needs.
  • Stewardship - using sound strategic planning to make Burnie a better place for future generations to inherit.
  • Service excellence - learning from experience and striving to continually improve everything we do.
  • Initiative - continually looking for better ways of doing things and encouraging our people to show initiative in a supportive environment.
  • Teamwork - working together to create a culture based on sharing a common vision, mutual respect and support for each other.
  • Environmental responsibility - valuing, protecting and responsibly managing our unique natural resources and creating a place which promotes safe and happy living.
  • Sustainability - managing our resources and assets to ensure a sustainable, viable financial future.
