Redevelopment of the Burnie waterfront, between Alexander Street and Wilmot Street, continues the rejuvenation of Burnie.

The works will compliment the CBD improvement works that have been carried out over the last 10 (ten) years and the recently announced Makers Workshop, to be constructed at West Park.

The aim of the waterfront project is to:

  • Connect the CBD to the Waterfront.
  • Improve recreational opportunities for the Burnie community.
  • Promote a greater use of the North Terrace area.
  • Provide a pedestrian friendly environment, with lower traffic speeds.

To achieve these aims the parking area in Hilder Parade is being converted to a pedestrian friendly environment that can be used for passive recreation. Traffic calming along North Terrace in the form of a one way traffic flow and narrower road pavement, will also reinforce the pedestrian friendly nature of the area.

As part of the project feasibility a detailed traffic report was developed that considered various options for improving pedestrian safety and traffic management in the CBD including North Terrace.

A West to East one-way traffic flow along North Terrace was determined to be the preferred solution as:

  • Traffic flow west to East does not require cross over of major flows at each end of the one way stream (Alexander Street and Wilmot Street).
  • Provision is made for a direct entry in to the CBD from the West and easy access to the Multistorey car park in Marine Terrace.

A clockwise traffic flow provides for the future development of a circulating one way traffic flow in the CBD. In most cities a circulating clockwise traffic flow has been found to be the most effective arrangement.

During the introduction of a major traffic change, implementation issues do arise, especially during the construction phase. Council staff are monitoring issues as they arise and where appropriate measures will be introduced to address concerns.
